You're doing alright

I don’t know who needs to hear this but...

You’re doing alright.

Sometimes (a lot of the time at the moment) things can start to get a bit much.

Like you’re adrift in a boat, heaving buckets of water back into the sea whilst the very same body of water gushes out of a hole in the other end.

For a start, there’s that thing. You know, that big thing that’s happening right now.

Looming over our heads not unlike a giant spherical spaceship, shrouding the landscape in a dark shadow and threatening to beam people up at any moment.

It’s completely abnormal and shouldn’t be happening and things are a bit crap.

Then you add to that all the normal stuff that happens on days where stuff isn’t going right (particularly relevant to creative/business-y types).


It’s probably raining.

A client/boss/randomer on social media wasn’t quite as enamoured with your wiley wordage as you imagined they’d be.

You’re inching ever closer to 3 different deadlines, none of which have been inspiring enough to get you to finish them so far.

You haven’t posted on LinkedIn for a week. Or Instagram. Or TikTok. Actually, you don’t have that one, but still.

Really the whole marketing thing’s kind of gone out the window.

In reality you’re struggling to think of things to share. Every ‘rubbish’ idea you have just isn’t ‘good enough’.

At least, it doesn’t compare to theirs. Those brilliant shiny posts with bags of likes and loves and claps.

The exacting standard you’ve set for your own stuff currently seems unobtainable (guess what, it probably is!).


What else? Oh yes…

You’ve got a parking ticket.

You’ve probably rubbed your other half/colleague/housemate up the wrong way with an ill-timed comment.

Your performance in another social interaction left much to be desired. The Geordie narrator of your personal reality show delivering a wince and an ‘ohh dear oh dear’. (good news… nobody’s watching.) 

The big list you wrote at the beginning of the week doesn’t have many ticks on it.

You indulge once more in the strange strangulation of procrastination.

What follows is the vague feeling that you’ve done something and nothing at all.

And here we are again.

A big pile of bleurgh…

*deep breath*


You’re doing alright.

I mean, you might not be. Technically speaking you probably could have done that thing better.

Sure.

You might want to think about tightening up this or tweaking that.


But you. Yourself. In this moment.

You’re doing ok.

You’ve achieved some stuff. You’re alive.

Some things are good. Little wins are still wins.

And it’s just a day. A day in a very bizarre and irregular time.

There’s always tomorrow.


Also, forget about those unobtainable standards of perfection. Let yourself off the hook and just do it anyway.

This is a reminder to me as much as anyone else.
